In 1839, A.P. Pfister, Alabama’s unofficial composer laureate,
wrote “The Alabama University March": Composed and Respectfully
Dedicated to the Faculty of the University of Alabama.” This march,
the first song ever written expressly for the University, was played
at various UA ceremonies over the next hundred years, although it is
rarely played now, and was never used as a fight song.
