In March 1926, some months after UA won its first Rose
Bowl and was becoming a household name in athletic and academic circles,
Rammer Jammer selected a winner of its fight song contest. “It
is with great pleasure that Rammer Jammer announces the award of the
prize for the new song to Mr. Ethelred Sykes, [class of] ’26, present
editor of our contemporary, the Crimson-White….We ask that the
song be played on every occasion in which a battle march is needed, and,
if it is liked, for the students to accept it [as our fight song.]” Here,
UA finally had its fight song: "Yea, Alabama"
